Leather manufacturers aim to sell products to Europe at favorable prices. Currently, this is possible only with LWG certification.
What kind of certification is this?
The organization Leather Working Group (LWG) deals with environmental impacts associated with the production of leather. To obtain the LWG certificate, manufacturers must implement programs for the environmentally friendly use of energy and wastewater treatment.
The audit is conducted in accordance with the LWG Protocol, which is used to assess the environmental indicators of leather manufacturers. The awards levels are established based on best practices in the industry and are recognition for the application of advanced environmental protection methods.
Medals are calculated as follows: 85% (gold), 75% (silver) and 65% (bronze). The supplier must score at least a specified number of points in each of the protocol sections. A black rating (without a medal) indicates that the supplier has passed the audit, but has not fully fulfilled the requirements of each section.
